The Great Sacred Stupa (That Luang), Vientiane, Laos

A stupa is a buddhist commerorative monument. At the very least, it contains information about the person being commemorated and some holy relic. The Great Sacred Stupa is one of the very large Stupas that are famous. Many smaller memorial stupas adjoin it.

I was fascinated by this dragon. . .

and so was Irene.

More dentition was readily available.

We couldn't photograph inside the stupa, but these outdoor buddhas were very compelling.

Adjacent to the Great Stupa lies a beautiful reclining buddha.
Reclining bhuddha have reached nirvana at the moment of death.

A row of smaller stupas surround the reclining buddha.  They each memorialize one or more individuals.  Some are very recent.

Another adjacent building displayed this panel.  Does any one know what it signifies?
